April 20, 2005

The SCIAC Athletes of the Week have been named and the honorees -- all track and field athletes -- are: La Verne's Donte Witherspoon; CMS' Scott Bennett and Kim Sonne; and Cal Lutheran's Heather Worden.

ULV: Donte Witherspoon, Track & Field
A senior from North Hollywood, Witherspoon won both the men's long jump and triple jump events with lifetime bests and NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the SCIAC Track and Field Championships (April 16-18). Witherspoon leaped 23-8 3/4 to capture the long jump winning the competition by nearly a foot. Witherspoon returned to win the triple jump with a distance of 47-2½, taking the event by almost two feet. Currently Witherspoon ranks #2 nationally in the long jump and #5 in the triple jump.

CMS: Scott Bennett, Track & Field
The senior from Mission Viejo won the shot put and discus throw at the SCIAC Championships for the second straight year with personal best marks in each event. He also finished third in the hammer throw. In the discus he broke the CMS record with a throw of 168-5, the best winning throw since 1979 and a personal best by six and half feet. In the shot put he beat the second best shotputter in SCIAC D3 history with a throw of 51-3, a personal best by over a foot. He led the hammer throw until the final round and recorded his second best throw of the season. Both the shot and discus marks were NCAA qualifying marks and he is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the discus and 19th in the shot. He and a teammate were the high point scorers in the meet with 26 points. Bennett has scored 90 points in his four years at the SCIAC Championships.

CLU: Heather Worden, Track & Field
The junior from Lancaster won both the 1500m and 800m events at the 2005 SCIAC Track & Field Championships. Her time of 4:42.10 in the 1500m was more than five seconds faster than the second place finisher. In the 800m, she posted a season-best time of 2:17.59. Worden has not lost any races of 800m or above so far this season. In addition to her two victories at the Championships, she also helped the Regals' 4x400m Relay team to a 5th-place finish. Their time of 4:11.95 was the sixth-best time in CLU's SCIAC history.

CMS: Kim Sonne, Track & Field
The junior from San Diego won the steeplechase, was on the winning 4 x 400 relay and finished second in the 800 and 1500 meters at the SCIAC Championships. On Saturday, after running preliminary races in the 1500 and 800, she won the steeple with a SCIAC record time of 11:17.55. This time is also an NCAA qualifying mark and is currently ranked 12th in the nation. On Monday, she finished a strong second to an NCAA qualifier in the 1500 and 800 and then ran the second leg on the winning 4 x 400 relay. The relay ran the fastest time in the SCIAC this season and narrowly missed an NCAA qualifying time. Sonne scored 28½ points in the meet (outscoring four teams) with the most difficult combination of events contested at the meet.
