Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wins 2012 Women’s Tennis SCIAC Title

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earned a 5-4 victory over Pomona-Pitzer in the title match of the 2012 Women’s Tennis SCIAC Championships on Saturday, May 5, at the Matador Tennis Complex. The Athenas trailed after doubles but rallied in singles to preserve its unbeaten conference record.

For the first time in SCIAC play Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (19-3, 10-0 SCIAC) faced an uphill climb falling behind 2-1 after doubles play. CMS’ Kristin Lim and Jessie Huang earned an 8-4 win at first doubles putting the Athenas on the scoreboard.

 
 

Following a CMS retirement at third singles the Sagehens (14-6, 8-2 SCIAC) earned a third point and led 3-1. It was the first the Athenas surrendered three points to a conference opponent this season.

 
 

Then started a sequence of CMS singles wins with Chloe Dobbert and Jaclyn Smrecek tying up the match up victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Teammate and reigning NCAA National Singles Champion Kristin Lim put the Athenas on top and just one point away from the SCIAC title with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles.

 
 

Freshman Sarah Kukino earned the match and title clinching point following her 6-3, 6-3 win over Arthi Padmanabhan at four singles. Pomona-Pitzer’s Sammy Chao earned a straight sets win at second singles to finish out the match.

 
 

No. 3 Redlands defeated No. 4 Cal Lutheran 9-0 in the third place match, No. 6 Whittier took down No. 8 Occidental 6-3 for fifth, and No. 5 La Verne held on for a 5-4 victory against No. 7 Caltech. For complete results of all tournament matches, click here.
