Pomona-Pitzer Earns May Sportsmanship Award from ITA
Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team was honored as one of May's recipients of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Sportsmanship Award, the ITA announced this week (along with the Haverford Men's Tennis team).
The
ITA National Team Sportsmanship Award is a monthly award that goes
to one men's and one women's team that has exemplified outstanding
sportsmanship, character and ethical conduct in the true spirit of
competition and collegiate tennis. The winners are selected by the
ITA Ethics and Infractions Committee from nominations received from
all ITA member institutions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and
Junior/Community Colleges).
This monthly award began in 2004. In addition to the obvious
reasons, sportsmanship and fair play are considered important in
college tennis due to the fact that players make their own line
calls during a match.
Pomona-Pitzer is coached by interim head coach Brittany Biebl.
Biebl served as the assistant coach of the Sagehens program for the
past four seasons.
"Pomona-Pitzer is incredibly honored to be the ITA Team Sportsmanship award winners for May," Biebl said. "Within our program, we place great importance on sportsmanship and respect of the game. Our athletes play because they love the sport. Our focus on continually cultivating respect for opponents, teammates, ourselves and tennis as a whole helps develop a culture of hard work, poise, competitive spirit, and teamwork; we recognize that these attributes are as important to life as they are to tennis. As
the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the
athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis
community. The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men's and
women's varsity coaches representing over 1,200 institutions,
administers numerous regional and national championships and the
Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings for over 20,000 college
varsity student-athletes at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA
and Junior College levels. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards
program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics,

Pomona-Pitzer finished the season with a 16-7 record and an
appearance in the NCAA West Regional finals. Junior Jamie Solomon
(Los Gatos, Calif.) will go on to play at the NCAA Singles
Championships in Cary, North Carolina on May 26-28.
