Cal Lutheran Regals Face Puget Sound in NCAA First Round
The California Lutheran University women's soccer team will open its NCAA Playoffs in Tacoma, Washington to face the nation's fourth ranked University of Puget Sound (WA) on Saturday, November 10 at 11 am. The NCAA appearance is the first for the Regals since the 2002 season.
Cal Lutheran (8-10-4) and Puget Sound (18-1-1) met early on this season with the Loggers taking a 4-1 decision in Tacoma. Despite the loss CLU was the first team to score on UPS this season when Marisa Zambetti scored off a free kick in the 76th minute.
The Regals come into Saturday's match after winning back-to-back SCIAC playoff games. Thursday's match marked the second time in as many contests CLU knocked off the nationally-ranked Athenas in Claremont.
After dropping a pair of games to Occidental in the regular season and losing to the Tigers just six days earlier, the Regals hung tough and managed to win in penalty kicks and earn the automatic bid. Cal Lutheran is 3-1-1 against nationally ranked Division III opponents, with its sole loss against UPS over two months ago.
Freshman Aubrie Smith and Brittany Clark have solidified their respective roles as goal scorers and will look to pressure the UPS defensive effort.
Puget Sound experienced a completely different year as the Loggers won 18 straight games to start the season. The team rolled to a North West Conference (NWC) championship. However, the last two games have resulted in only tie and loss of the season, respectively.
UPS has not stopped its offensive assault earning a 78-15 advantage in shots taking, but its opponents have scored three times to just twice for the Loggers.
Janice Levien has scored 21 goals, more than double the next highest individual total, with six for game-winners. Adrienne Folsom has scored 10 times and assisted on eight of the team's 52 goals in '07.
The winner of Saturday's match will play the following day at 1
pm against the victor of the afternoon match between UC Santa Cruz
and Whitworth (WA).
