CLU Volleyball Halts La Verne's SCIAC Streak at 56

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (Oct. 7) - The Cal Lutheran volleyball team snapped #4 La Verne's streak of 56 straight SCIAC match victories with an impressive 3-1 win Friday at CLU Gymnasium.

Game scores were 30-15, 30-28, 15-30, and 30-21.

CLU kept its undefeated streak alive and improved to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the league. La Verne, the 4th-ranked team in the nation, dropped to 11-5 and 6-1, giving the Regals sole possession of first place in the conference.

La Verne, the defending SCIAC champion, had not lost a league match since a forfeit against Cal Lutheran on Oct. 6, 2001. The last on-court loss for the Leopards was a 3-0 setback against Occidental on Oct. 31, 2000.

The Regals came out strong in the opening game and hit .536. The Regals held the lead for much of the second game before the Leopards made it close towards the end of the game. Game three belonged to La Verne as the Leopards hit .345 to CLU's -.054. However, they fell apart in the fourth stanza and hit .000 (10 kills, 10 errors, 34 attempts).

Four Regals hit double figures in kills. Mo Coverdale, who hit .484, posted a match-high 18 kills, while Summer Plante-Newman was just behind with 15. Kaylin Oddo, who hit .414, collected 14 kills and Christie Barker had 10. Defensively, libero Keely Smith kept busy with a match-high 26 digs.

For La Verne, Jodi Lindsay had 12 kills and Courtney Rollins added 10. Rollins had no hitting errors in 20 swings. Mandy Sedia played tough at the net and had 3 solo blocks to go along with 7 assisted blocks.

CLU plays a non-conference match at La Sierra Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
