The University of La Verne will host the 2017 SCIAC Softball Tournament at the Campus West Athletics Facilities May 5-7.
The host Leopards (27-11) are the No. 1 seed and will host No. 4 Chapman (20-18) on Friday at 2 p.m. Game two will feature the second-seeded CMS Athenas (20-18) and the No. 3 Whittier Poets (20-20) at 4:30 p.m.
The double elimination tournament continues Saturday with the championship beginning at noon on Sunday. The winner gets the SCIAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
La Verne is ranked No. 6 in the West Region and won the regular season conference title with a 20-8 record. They won the regular season last year but lost the tournament championship to CMS for the automatic berth.
Alexis Schiff, for La Verne, leads the conference in all games in home runs (14), RBI (35), total bases (95), walks (25), batting average (.393), slugging percentage (.848) and on base percentage (.507).
CMS finished second in the SCIAC regular season at 18-10. In 2016 they upset the Leopards 4-2 in the championship game to move onto the NCAA Tournament. They went 3-2 in the NCAA Spokane Regional falling to Linfield in the final game, 6-5 in eight innings.
CMS brings strong pitching into the tournament as Anna Gurr leads the SCIAC in ERA (0.63), wins (14), strikeouts (120) and saves (five).
With a 16-12 SCIAC record, the Poets earned the No. 3 seed and have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games, the best record out of the four teams. They are led by Brianna Alvarez who leads the SCIAC in stolen bases with 45. Marialena Ahern leads the conference in doubles (14), HBP (14) and is tied with Schiff with 35 RBI.
Chapman tied with Cal Lutheran at 14-14 in conference play but took the tiebreaker by winning the head to head series with CLU. They swept CMS on April 29th to get into the tournament. Michaela Foisy leads the team batting .373 and with 44 hits, 28 runs and 29 stolen bases.
