NCAA DIII West Regional Cross Country Results
SCIAC schools excelled Saturday, November 15 at the 2008 NCAA
Division III West Regional cross country meet hosted by Willamette
University in Salem, OR. Two SCIAC women's teams and one SCIAC
men's team earned automatic team berths to the NCAA National meet
this coming Saturday, November 22 at Hanover College in Indiana. In
addition, numerous SCIAC individuals also earned slots in the
National meet.
On the women's side, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the Regional title
by one point over SCIAC foe Pomona-Pitzer. The CMS runners went
7-9-12-27-33 in the race to score 88 points, while Pomona-Pitzer
went 3-10-11-25-40 to score 89 points. Whittier tallied 206 points
for eighth, with Redlands (229) in ninth, Occidental (251) 11th,
Cal Lutheran (293) 13th, and Caltech (466) 16th.
Individually, Pomona-Pitzer junior Alicia Freese led all runners
with her third place finish in 21:54 over the 6000m (3.7 mile)
course. Whittier's Michele Callaway was right behind in fourth
(22:02), with CMS's Evelyn Ross in 7th (22:10), CMS's Julia Rigby
9th (22:21), and Pomona-Pitzer's Anna Scharfen 10th (22:22).
Willamette University's Maddie Coffman won the race in 21:26.
Callaway earns the SCIAC's lone individual berth to the National
meet.
For the men, Whitworth won the men's team title with 67 points,
followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with 83 (3-12-21-23-24).
Occidental took fourth (93), Pomona-Pitzer fifth (134), Redlands
tenth (263), Cal Lutheran twelfth (328), and Caltech 14th
(398).
Individually, Florian Scheulen of CMS finished third to lead SCIAC
runners. Scheulen clocked 25:05 over the 8000 meter (5 mile) course
to finish just ahead of Occidental's Eric Kleinsasser (4th in
25:08), Pomona-Pitzer's Torrey Olson (5th, 25:11). Oxy's Keith
Blumenfeld took ninth in 25:26 to also finish in the top ten.
Whitworth's Nicholas Gallagher won the race in 25:01.
Kleinsasser, Olson, Blumenfeld and Oxy's Clay Hoadley all earn
individual spots to the National meet.
