SCIAC Cross Country at NCAA Championships

Pacing all SCIAC runners, Pomona-Pitzer junior Alicia Freese earned All-American honors at the 2008 NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 22. Freese finished 22nd in the women's race in the season-ending championship meet held at Hanover College in southern Indiana.

Two SCIAC women's teams competed, with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps finishing 20th with 434 points and campus rival Pomona-Pitzer finishing 22nd with 462 points. A total of 32 teams competed in the women's meet, which was won by Middlebury with 179 points.

Freese clocked 21:32 over the 6000m (3.7 mile) course. SCIAC runners behind Freese included CMS senior Evelyn Ross (50th, 22:02), CMS senior Katie Harris (67th, 22:09), Pomona-Pitzer senior Anna Scharfen (84th, 22:19), Whittier frosh Michelle Callaway (96th, 22:28), CMS frosh Julia Rigby (125th, 22:39), and Pomona-Pitzer senior Maddy Kieselhorst (128th, 22:40). A total of 279 runners completed the race, which was won by Bethel's Marie Borner in 20:43.

On the men's side Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was the lone SCIAC team representative, and the Stags finished 30th out of 32 teams, with team members finishing 120-148-149-155-161 for the squad's final score of 733. Cortland State of New York won the meet with 80 points.

Individually, Occidental senior Keith Blumenfeld paced all SCIAC men with his 70th place finish in 25:22 over the 8000m (5 mile) course. SCIAC runners behind Blumenfeld included Oxy frosh Eric Kleinsasser (132nd, 25:47), Oxy senior Clay Hoadley (139th, 25:49), CMS junior Florian Scheulen (169th, 25:59), Pomona-Pitzer senior Torrey Olson (190th, 26:09), and the CMS duo of frosh Bryan Chow (200th, 26:12) and senior Mike Van Antwerp (201st, 26:12). A total of 278 runners finished the race, which was won by Hamilton junior Peter Kosgei in 24:22.
