SCIAC Cross Country Championship Results

Occidental College swept both men's and women's team titles Saturday, Oct. 27 at the 2007 SCIAC Cross Country Championships in La Mirada Park. The men's team scored 27 points to win behind a 1-2-3 sweep, while the women scored 43 points to win.

On the men's side, senior Kevin Chaves won the individual crown and SCIAC Athlete of the Year honors by traversing the 8000m (5 mile) course in a comfortable 26:23, leading teammates Galen Smith (2nd, 26:42) and Keith Blumenfeld (26:51) across the line. Oxy went 1-2-3-8-13, with David Martinez and Richard Infantino rounding out the Tiger top five.

Occidental's team win avenged an earlier season loss to Claremont-M-S in the multi-dual meets, and gives the Tigers the conference title outright. CMS's Brian Kopczynski and Redlands's Chris Smith completed the top five behind Oxy's 1-2-3 punch. Behind Occidental's 27 points, Claremont-M-S scored 36 for second, Redlands scored 79 for third, and Pomona-Pitzer scored 102 for fourth.

On the women's side, sophomore Alicia Freese of Pomona-Pitzer ran away from CMS's Evelyn Ross in the last mile to win going handily. Freese clocked 22:18 over the 6000m (3.7 mile) course to win by nearly 40 seconds over Ross (22:55). Darlene Partida (Whittier), Maddie Weissman (Occidental), and Avery Kelly (Redlands) rounded out the top five individually.

Occidental runners Weissman, Rachel Keylon, Denali Halsey, Grace Peck and Caitlin Croall finished 4-6-7-9-17 to score 43 points, ahead of Claremont-M-S at 63. Redlands scored 68 points for third and Pomona-Pitzer scored 76 for fourth. Occidental had earlier finished 7-0 in the multi-dual meets, and thus secures a perfect 2007 SCIAC season and title.
