2008 SCIAC Men’s Water Polo Championships (Day One Recap)

 

Three of the top four seeds won their respective contests with No. 6 Whittier pulling off an upset of No. 3 Occidental. The Poets will face No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer in the first semifinal with host No. 4 Cal Lutheran taking on top-seed Redlands in the other.

 

Pomona-Pitzer 16, La Verne 3 

The Sagehens scored early and often pulling out to a 9-1 halftime advantage. The Leopards had scoring opportunities but Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Grant Cooper made seven saves in the first half to seal the game.

 

Ben Hadley netted five goals including a first half hat trick, and scored in each quarter. Four different Sagehens scored multiple goals.

 

Alex Hacker led La Verne with a pair of goals.

 

Whittier 4, Occidental 3

The Poets scored four unanswered goals to open the game before Occidental’s Cameron Brahmst scored with 24 seconds left in the third quarter.

 

The Tigers Andrew Valdes and Brahmst each score fourth quarter goals to pull within one. With just under two minutes left, Whittier goalkeeper Casey Regehr blocked a penalty shot to preserve the lead and the win.

 

Redlands 23, Caltech 2

Redlands led from the get-go and score 12 of 13 total goals in the opening half. Ian Starkie and his seven goals led a group of six Bulldogs with multiple scores.

 

Paul Fleiner scored two goals for the Beavers. CIT goalkeeper Max Merfeld led all players with six saves.

 

Cal Lutheran 10, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7

 

A back-and-forth battle went the Kingsmen way as the CLU defense shut out CMS during a 5-0 run over the final 14:40 of the game.

 

Stags sophomore Andrew Cosentino scored four second quarter goals and five for the game in the losing effort.

 

CLU’s Jeff Chaney and Matt Heagy scored three apiece in the win.

 

Jordan Bouey notched 11 saves while allowing only one second half goal.

 

Friday Notes

Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran are each mathematically alive to earn the 2008 SCIAC overall title with Whittier in the running for the tournament crown.

 

Bulldogs junior Ian Starkie scored seven goals and Kingsmen goalkeeper Jordan Bouey made 11 saves and are the current tournament leaders in each category, respectively.
