Redlands Captures Men's Track Title
The University of Redlands track & field programs competed in the 2011 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship meet on Friday and Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, with the men making history by dethroning rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges from its 19-year reign as conference champion. The Bulldogs earned 166 2/3 points in an all-out team effort and surpassed the Stags in the final few events of a high-caliber competition.
In addition, the Maroon and Gray women recorded a second-place showing at the two-day event. By combining the dual-meet results with the championship finish, Redlands garners a share of the conference title with CMS.
On the men's side, Redlands boasted four individual event-winners, three of whom posted NCAA Provisional marks. Senior Ross Blanchard (Novato, CA) fired off a time of 14.54 in the 110m Hurdles, while junior Cameron Clark (Bellevue, WA) came out on top of the 400m Hurdle race by crossing the finish line in 54.14. Sophomore Bryan Artmann (Henderson, NV) surpassed the provisional mark in the Pole Vault by clearing a career-best 15' 11".
In addition, senior Kyle Smith (Hoquiam, WA) uncorked a throw of 190' 9" in the Javelin, winning the field by more than nine feet.
For the women, three competitors won their respective events, highlighted by senior Mackenzie Smith (Hoquiam, WA) in the Javelin with her provisional mark of 140'. Sophomore Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks, CA) won the 200m Dash with a time of 25.71, while sophomore Vainayaki Sivaji (North Hollywood, CA) unleashed a time of 57.32 in the 400m Dash for first place.
