2010 Track & Field Athletes of the Year
2010 SCIAC Track & Field Athletes of the Year
Cal Lutheran throwers Christa Youngern and Eric Flores have been
named 2010 SCIAC Track and Field Athletes of the Year, the Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on May 4.
Both athletes are accomplished throwers in multiple events who made
an record-shattering impact on conference competition this past
season.
Youngern won three events and set meet records in two events to
help lead her team to a
second place finish in the recent SCIAC Championships held April
30-May 1. The San Dimas, CA senior won the hammer on Friday at
184-0 to erase a meet record that had stood since 1997, and then
won the discus at 149-2 to beat the previous conference meet record
from 1984. On Saturday, Youngern took the shot put title at 42-6 to
win by over a foot.
Youngern has been a force all season in the three throwing events, and has established CLU school records in all three as well. She stands high on SCIAC all-time lists (#2 in the discus, #2 in the hammer, #5 in the shot put), and is highly ranked nationally in NCAA Division III, standing at #2 in the discus, #3 in the hammer, and #12 in the shot put.
Flores won the hammer and shot put and took the runner-up spot in
the discus at the 2010 SCIAC Championships – with his hammer
mark breaking a meet record that had stood since 1994.
The Custer, South Dakota junior won the hammer at 210-6 on Friday,
and then returned to take second in the discus at 159-6, just three
inches out of first place. On Saturday, Flores nabbed the shot put
title at 55-5 3/4 to win by over four feet to help his team to a
fifth-place finish.
Flores has dominated the SCIAC throwing scene this season, and has established school records for CLU in the hammer and shot put, while his discus mark stands second. On the SCIAC all-time lists, Flores’s 215-4 is the best-ever mark, while he stands #2 in the shot put and #10 in the discus. On the current NCAA Division III lists, Flores leads the nation in the hammer, and stands #3 in the shot put and #22 in the discus.
