CMS Voted First in 2018 SCIAC Men's Tennis Preseason Poll

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) was voted to finish first in the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Tennis Preseason Poll following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

CMS received seven of eight first place votes and 63 points in the preseason voting. The Stags finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 32-4 overall record and an impressive 10-0 mark in conference play. CMS captured its 12th straight SCIAC title with a 5-3 victory over Redlands in last year's conference tournament and powered through the national field on its way to the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship title match where it eventually fell to Emory. The Stags will be in search of a 13th straight league title this spring.

Redlands earned 54 points in the 2018 preseason voting including a first place vote and was tabbed to finish second in the conference. The Bulldogs finished last season with a 16-7 overall record highlighted by an 8-2 ledger in SCIAC play. Redlands advanced to last year's SCIAC Tournament title match before falling to national runner-up CMS.

Third place in the preseason voting went to Pomona-Pitzer (51 points) after the Sagehens logged an 18-11 overall ledger and a 6-4 mark in SCIAC action in 2017. Pomona-Pitzer finished 1-2 at the SCIAC Tournament last season.

After notching an 8-17 mark (4-6 SCIAC) and a fifth place league finish a year ago, Cal Lutheran was voted to finish fourth heading into the 2018 season. The Kingsmen received 33 points in the vote, edging Caltech which received 32 points to secure the fifth slot. The Beavers will look to build on their 5-11 overall record and their 2-6 mark in conference play. Whittier was tabbed to finish sixth with 27 points after the Poets came in fourth in the standings last year. Whittier posted an 11-10 overall record and a 4-4 mark against SCIAC competition.

Rounding out the preseason poll are Chapman (16 points) and Occidental (12 points) as the Panthers and Tigers finished seventh and eighth respectively in 2017.

Entering the 2018 season, CMS is ranked second in the Oracle ITA Division III Top 40; Redlands is ranked 11th; and Pomona-Pitzer is ranked 12th.
