Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wins Sixth Straight SCIAC Men's Tennis Championship

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the 2011 SCIAC Men's Tennis Championship this afternoon, defeating Pomona Pitzer, 8-1 in the Championship Match. CMS, entering the Championship as the top seed needed to defeat Cal Luthern to make it to the Championship Match as they earned a first round bye. This is the sixth straight Championship for the Stags.

In the Championship Match, CMS jumped in front as they swept the doubles play. In first doubles, Zhenya Pereverzin and Ronald Wu defeated Tommy Meyer and Frankie Allinson, 8-6. In second doubles, Alex Lane and Brandon Wei defeated Uday Singh and Max Sabel, 8-2. In third doubles, Russell Brockett and Robbie Erani defeated Alex Groth and Chris Wiechert, 8-3.

In singles play, CMS won five of the six matches played. Pomona did take the sixth singles match. At first singles, Alex Lane defeated Tommy Meyer 5-7, 6-2, 10-3. In second singles, Robbie Erani defeated Chris Wiechert 3-6, 6-2, 10-8. In third singles, Alex Johnson defeated Frankie Allinson 6-4, 6-2. Fourth singles saw Russell Brockett defeat Uday Singh 7-5, 6-3. Fifth singles had Ronald Wu defeat Max Sabel 6-2, 6-0. In Pomona's win at sixth singles, Nick Tagliarino defeated Zhenya Pereverzin 7-5, 6-1.

CMS has earned the SCIAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships. They will await a first round opponent. Other teams in the SCIAC are now hoping for at-large bids into the Championships.
