Cerritos, CA. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges led the 2008 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships from the opening event as both the men's and the women's relays earned victories in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
On the women's side the Athenas racked up 938 points in earning its sixth straight conference championship. The University of Redlands came in second (630) and not far behind were Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (573) and California Lutheran University (487).
Leading CMS was freshman Annie Perrizolo, who was named SCIAC Female Swimmer of the Year following Saturday's finals. On day one she posted a sixth place finish in the 200-year IM before cruising to a pair of breaststroke victories.
Her time of 1:05.19 in the 100-yard breast finals was not only a championship meet record, but an NCAA Automatic Qualifying time. To conclude her individual events she was in a class of her own in the 200-yard breast and set a new SCIAC record of 2:21.16 in the event prelims.
CLU senior Kelsey Myers was the only female swimmer to win three individual events as she earned victories in the 200-yard (1:54.54), 100-yard (52.48) and 50-yard (24.39) freestyles. All her winning times were under the NCA "B" Qualifying standard.
The CMS Men's team surpassed the 1,000 point mark after winning the final event of the competition and completing a clean sweep of all five relay races. The Stags outscored this year's runner-ups and the seven-time back-to-back champion University of Redlands by over 250 points.
CMS freshman Andrew Constentino led the Stags with the same trifecta of event wins as Myers had in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyles. His efforts in the 100 (46.42) and 200 (1:41.58) are NCAA "B" Qualifying marks.
Whittier College senior Manny Sanchez won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, along with his 200-yard IM victory to earn SCIAC Male Swimmer of the Year honors.
He was the only swimmer to break one minute in the 100 (57.45), won the 200 breast by over five seconds (2:05.70) and took the 200-IM by two seconds (1:54.13). All three times were under the NCAA "B" Qualifying standard.
In the women's overall standings, the Athenas scored 16 points while Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the University of Redlands tied for second with 12. Cal Lutheran ranks fourth with nine, Occidental finishes fifth with seven and La Verne sixth earning five points. Caltech and Whittier tie for seventh with two points each.
On the men's side, CMS edged out Redlands 15-14 for the 2008 title while Pomona-Pitzer finishes third with 11 points. Occidental rounds out the top half of the standings with nine points.
