Four SCIAC Schools to Participate in the 2nd Annual "Hour of Power" Relay

Four SCIAC institutions, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, Occidental College, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the University of Redlands swimming teams will participate it the second annual "Leave it in the Pool" Hour of Power on Tuesday November 6th.  This event consists of continuous relays, any stroke, all-out swimming, for an hour, with the objective of keeping all relays in each pool on the same length.

The event honors former Carleton College swimmer, Ted Mullin, who died of cell sarcoma in 2006.  The goal of the Hour of Power is to have multiple Division III programs across the country simultaneously swimming to raise team spirit, awareness, and philanthropic support of the work being done to find a cure for the disease.

The second annual event benefits the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research at the University of Chicago.  While sarcoma is a rare cancer, 55% of all sarcoma cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. occur in ages 15-29.  It is the fifth most common cancer in that age group.

About the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research:
Funds raised for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research will act as seed funding for the University of Chicago pediatric sarcoma research program, allowing collaborative efforts between clinicians and physician-scientists in the identification of the causes of sarcoma, at the most basic molecular and cellular levels. With a team of dedicated Pediatric oncologists, Orthopedists, and Radiation Therapists in place, the Ted Mullin Fund will support the recruitment of two additional scientists devoted to the study of sarcomas; one to focus on the molecular basis of sarcoma and the other to translate those findings into improved therapies for cancer patients like Ted.
