Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez announced yesterday that Head Women's Basketball Coach Jim Ducey has been named head men's basketball coach of the University of Redlands Bulldogs.  Current Head Coach Gary Smith will step down at the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year following his 36-year tenure at the helm.

"We are fortunate to have Jim Ducey on our staff and I am pleased that he is willing to move into this role as the head men's basketball coach," stated Martinez.  "Coach Ducey has been extremely successful in all of his head coaching stints and I anticipate that his success will continue in our men's program."

Ducey arrived at the University of Redlands in 1991 as the men's and women's tennis coach and assistant men's basketball coach under Coach Smith.  In 1998, he transitioned into the head women's basketball coach and continued working with the tennis teams, becoming the director of the programs in 2000.  Ducey then returned to the helm of Redlands women's tennis in 2004 while still serving as the head women's basketball coach.

"The only two Redlands men's basketball coaches I have known in my lifetime are Lee Fulmer and Gary Smith," Ducey stated.  "They have been great father figures and mentors to me so it is an honor for me to continue in their footsteps as the head men's basketball coach."

While at Redlands, Ducey has coached many All-Conference, All-American, Academic All-America, and National Champion players.  Ducey gained his 100th career victory as the Bulldog women's basketball coach on January 22, 2005, when the team defeated the University of La Verne, 66-61.  Ducey also captured his 100th victory with the Redlands women's tennis team just a few months later.  For women's basketball, Ducey has accumulated an overall record of 138-87, with a 77-43 mark in conference competition.  He led the Bulldogs to a share of the conference title in 2003-04 and helped Redlands finish in the top-three of the SCIAC on five other occasions.  He is a four-time recipient of the West Region Tennis Coach of the Year Award and a one-time recipient of the National Tennis Coach of the Year award.  In tennis, Ducey guided the teams to a combined six conference titles, which includes five in a row for the men from 1995 to 1999 and the first since 1980 for the women's program during the 2005 campaign.

Prior to coming to Redlands, Ducey worked with the Coyotes of nearby Cal State San Bernardino as the head tennis coach for three seasons and director for two, and as the head men's basketball coach from 1984-91.  He helped establish the CSUSB men's basketball program in its inaugural years and posted two seasons with 20 or more wins, leading the Coyotes to the NCAA West Regional in 1989.

Ducey graduated from the University of Redlands with a degree in physical education and minors in art and geology.  He later went on to earn his Master of Arts in Education from Claremont Graduate School.

In addition to serving as the head men's basketball coach, Ducey will continue working with the Redlands women's tennis program as the head coach.

"I have sincerely enjoyed working with the women's basketball team," Ducey said. "I am also very grateful for this opportunity."
