GOLF: LA VERNE CAPTURES SECOND PLACE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The University of La Verne completed its most
successful season in school history with a second-place overall
finish at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, held May
15-18 at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers, Indiana.
La Verne shot 299 in its final round to finish with a four-day
total of 1216 (305-311-301-299) to edge Ohio Wesleyan (1217) for
second place. St. John's (MN) secured the national championship
with a tournament-best 1204 (300-300-301-303). Huntington College
(1227) and Oglethorpe University (1235) rounded the Top 5.
Sophomore Rizal Amin had the top individual finish for ULV tying
for 7th place overall with a four-round effort of 302
(75-79-73-75). Junior Chris Davis tied for 13th at 305
(75-74-77-79). Sophomore Jordan Talah fired a 70 (-2) on the final
day to finish at 306 (79-80-77-70) to jump from 46th to 15th in the
overall standings while senior Nathan Logan closed out his Leopard
career tied for 23rd after shooting 75 on Friday to conclude at 308
(78-79-76-75).
La Verne's previous high finish at the NCAA Championships was a
sixth-place effort in 2004.
Ranked #3 nationally in Division III heading into the tournament,
La Verne went through the entire conference portion of the schedule
unbeaten, sweeping all five SCIAC 18-hole tournaments before
winning the 36-hole conference championship tournament on April
30.
The second-place finish is the fourth consecutive by a SCIAC school
at the NCAAs. The University of Redlands held the runner-up
position each of the past three seasons (2004-06).
