HOME OF BULLDOG MEN'S WATER POLO - Seven SCIAC Championships

The 15th-ranked University of Redlands men’s water polo team (14-4) went 4-0 in its games at the Claremont Convergence from Oct. 3-4, defeating two Division I institutions, an NAIA school and the best Division III men’s water polo squad in the East, Johns Hopkins University (MD).

On Friday, the Bulldogs took care of Division I Fordham University (NY) by a 12-8 final as junior goalkeeper Jack Amaral (Porterville, CA) and senior goalkeeper Teddy Trowbridge (Mercer Island, WA) split time in goal. Redlands went on later in the day to defeat Concordia University 12-8, defeating the Eagles for the second time this season. Sophomore defender Andrew Smith-Jones (Annapolis, MD) powered the offensive attack on the game, finding the back of the net on four occasions.

Saturday proved to be a tougher test for the nationally-ranked squad as both games were decided by a smaller margin than Day 1. Junior center Brendan Meaney (Palm Desert, CA) and Smith-Jones each scored three goals against Iona College (NY), edging the Gaels 9-8. Meaney, senior center Buddy Olds (Murrieta, CA) and senior driver Andrew Becskehazy (Miami, FL) netted three goals apiece to lift Redlands over Johns Hopkins 11-8.

Smith-Jones led the way offensively throughout the Claremont Convergence, scoring a team-high 10 goals, while Meaney and Becskehazy also displayed supreme offensive talent as they each notched nine goals. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Olds with eight goals, senior defender Jon Rielly (Vista, CA) and junior utility player Jim Kehrig (Danville, CA) with two goals and junior utility player Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA), junior utility player Ian Starkie (Arroyo Grande, CA), sophomore center Miran Terzic (Palm Desert, CA) and junior driver Brent Dotters (Porterville, CA) with one goal each.

In goal, Trowbridge saw the majority of the action, saving 19 shots in three games of work. Amaral stopped 12 shots for the team, contributing a solid effort in spot duty.

Redlands travels to the SoCal Tournament this weekend, squaring off against host Pepperdine University at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11. The subsequent opponents in the tournament will be determined by who wins and loses.
