Four players scored in double figures to lead the No. 6 Washington University women’s basketball team to a 96-73 victory over visiting Whittier College in the opening round of the Eighth Annual McWilliams Classic at the WU Field House in St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard Halsey Ward led the Washington University attack with a team-high 14 points on 4-of-4 three-point shooting. Ward tied her career high with four three-point baskets in the game, and moved into sole possession of ninth place in school history with 80 three-pointers in her career.
Senior forward Jaimie McFarlin shot 6-of-9 from the field to tally a season-high 13 points, freshman forward Kathryn Berger finished the game with 11 points, all coming in the second half, and freshman guard Alex Hoover scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. As a team the Bears shot 48.6 percent from the field and they were 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from three-point range.
It was Ward that got the WU offense on track early in the game, as she hit a pair of triples through just 2:10 of action to give the Red and Green an early 6-2 lead. A lay-up from junior forward Janice Evans at the 13:52 mark gave Washington U. its first double-digit lead of the game at 14-4.
Whittier pulled within seven points on an Ashley Vierra free-throw 2:48 later, but a three-point play by McFarlin on the ensuing Washington University possession gave the Bears another 10-point lead and they never looked back. McFarlin led all scorers with 11 first-half points on 5-of-8 shooting and Hoover chipped in eight in the first period.
Coming out of the break, Whittier’s Courtney Zilbert sank a jumper on the Poets’ first possession, but Washington U. answered with a 13-0 run that allowed them to open up a 30-point lead. Ward scored five points during the scoring run and sophomore forward Kelsey Robb chipped in four.
The 96 points scored is the highest this season for Washington University, which is averaging 84.0 points per game this year. The Bears tied their season high dishing out 26 assists; they were led by junior forward Zoë Unruh who tied her career high with five dimes.
