Regals Overcome Slow Starts in Pair of Wins
Women's volleyball earns 3-1 victories to open home schedule
THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The California Lutheran University volleyball
opened its home schedule with matches against San Diego Christian
College and The Master's College on Wednesday at home. The Regals came
away with a 3-1 wins over San Diego Christian and The Master's after
dropping the first set in each match.
The Regals picked up their second win of the season with the victory
over San Diego Christian. After they dropped the first set 25-19, the
Regals bounced back with wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-15 to clinch the
match.
In the early match against the Hawks, Summer Plante-Newman led all players with 18 kills, she hit .359 and tallied 10 digs.
Senior Lindsey Benson collected a match-high 43 assists to go along
with eight digs. Sophomore Allison Kerr posted the top hitting
percentage in the match at .440 with 14 kills in 25 attempts. She also
racked up a match-high with five service aces.
Senior libero Elicia Hildreth led all players with 18 digs.
CLU hit .224 for the match and served nine aces while San Diego Christian hit .147 and had four aces.
San Diego Christian was led by Meggan Chapin (nine kills, eight digs)
and Lauren Howard (eight kills, five solo blocks, 12 digs).
In the second match, CLU went down early again and lost the first set
25-9. Then they bounced back with three straight set wins, 25-13,
25-20, 25-16.
Sophomore Erin Exline led the way in the second match with 11 kills and a .370 hitting percentage, both were match-highs.
Plante-Newman and Kerr each chipped in with nine kills and Hildreth posted a match-best 27 digs.
The Regals hit -.161 in the set one loss and came back with hitting percentages of .270, .109 and .289 to close out the match.
As a team CLU racked up nine aces for the second consecutive match with
four from Benson (33 assists), three from Kerr and two by sophomore
Megan Thorpe, who also had 18 digs.
Cal Lutheran will play in the Cal-Lu-fornia Invitational hosted by CLU
on Sept. 12-13. They will open up the invite on Friday against
Willamette (OR) University at 2:30 p.m.
