Mens Water Polo Fall Short In Cal Lu Tournament

The University of La Verne men’s water polo team played in
its second tournament of the 2008 season in Thousand Oaks, but came
out 0-4 in the Cal Lutheran University Fall Water Polo Tournament
over the weekend.
La Verne played it’s first match against Chapman University
on Saturday. The Leopards started off with tight play, ending the
first half trailing 4-2. However, senior Vince Makuch’s three
goals coupled with a goal each from Alex Hacker and Errol Stump
weren’t enough in the contest, and the Leos dropped the first
game 12-5. Makuch added 4 more goals for La Verne in the second
match against Ventura City College, who came back to tie the game
at the end of the 3rd quarter after trailing 4-2 at the end of the
first half. Leopard Gerald Bolson added two more goals and Andrew
Mackay put in one himself, but it wasn’t enough to overcome
Ventura, as La Verne dropped its second game 9-8.
Sunday’s action started off with a outing against conference
rival Occidental College. While five different Leopards were able
to find the net (Hacker 2, Makuch, Mackay, Sandoval, Czerwiec), La
Verne received its third loss of the tournament, losing by four
goals in a 10-6 final. ULV’s last game was against the
Whittier Poets, and while losing by only one goal in their last
meeting, the Leopards suffered a 9-2 loss despite Julian
Czerwiec’s second goal of the tournament and Alex
Hacker’s third of the day.
With two weeks off, the Leopards men’s water polo team will
gear up to co-host the Claremont Convergence Tournament starting on
Friday, October 3, and will look to find its first win of the
season.
