CLU Battled Nation's Elite at Slugfest

Heagy nets 10 over weekend

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The California Lutheran University men's water polo team faced a quartet of formidable opponents at the 2008 Slugfest hosted by UC Santa Cruz. The Kingsmen dropped its first three contests before defeating the host Banana Slugs 12-10 to conclude the tournament.

All four opponents are members of the Western Water Polo Association, starting with the nation's No. 13 ranked Santa Clara University. Six different Kingsmen scored in a 7-13 loss to the Broncos. Jordan Bouey recorded 10 saves in three quarters of play.

No. 15 UC Davis scored 19 times in a 7-19 CLU loss. Cal Lutheran junior Matt Heagy led the team with five goals and tallied six on the day.

CLU opened Sunday with its third consecutive top-20 nationally ranked opponent in the US Air Force Academy. Both teams played strong defensively with the Falcons edging the Kingsmen, 7-4.

Seven players scored in a 12-10 victory over UCSC with a team-high four coming from senior Jeff Chaney. Bouey notched a tournament-high 12 saves in the tournament finale over the nation's No. 10 ranked Division III squad.

Cal Lutheran (5-7) will host Mercyhurst (PA) College (7-2) on Thursday, October 2 at 4 p.m.
