LOS ANGELES, Calif
A 44-24 second half outburst carried Wartburg College to its sixth women’s basketball win in seven attempts with a 66-49 decision over Whittier College Monday, Dec. 17. It was head coach Bob Amsberry’s 150th career victory.
The Knights, opening the two-day Tiger-Poet Classic inside Occidental College’s McCulley Athletic Complex gymnasium, trailed 11-2 less than six minutes in against the Poets. Whittier (2-3) held a 21-8 lead inside the seven-minute mark of the opening frame, but Wartburg responded with a 14-4 stretch to end the half down only 25-22.
Freshman guard Samantha Harrington knocked down a three-pointer early in the second half to give the Orange and Black its first lead at 27-25. Whitter came back for a 38-35 advantage minutes later, but a 15-2 run at that point gave the Knights the lead for good.
Senior guard Elizabeth Campbell went over the 900-point mark for her career, leading Wartburg with 15 points. She also turned in six rebounds, second-highest for the squad, and two blocked shots. Junior center Sharese Van Sloten tallied 13 points. Senior guard Jamie Frantz topped the team with eight rebounds, part of a 36-30 advantage on the glass, and four assists.
Wartburg concludes the Tiger-Poet Classic Tuesday, Dec. 18, against Occidental College at 5 p.m.
