Regals Finish 2-2 at Wolverine Invitational

CLU picks up two wins over Carthage (WI)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The California Lutheran University women’s water polo team came away with two wins at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan last weekend. Bobby Sanders and Laura Peterson led the offensive attack for the Regals with nine and eight goals respectively over the four games.

The Regals opened the invitational with an 8-7 loss to Mercyhurst (PA) on Friday. On Saturday they topped Carthage (WI) 16-5 and later lost to No. 12 Michigan 15-6. CLU wrapped up the tournament with another win over Carthage (WI) on Sunday 15-4.

In the opening game against Mercyhurst the Regals trailed 3-0 at half time and scored seven second half goals but with 1:12 remaining Mercyhurst got a score from freshman Rachel Griepsma to lift the Lakers to the 8-7 win.

CLU was able to even the score at 5-5 entering the final period. The Regals got two goals apiece from Sanders and Joy Cyprian.

Cal Lutheran got back on the winning track with a 16-5 win over Carthage on Saturday morning. The Regals scored seven unanswered goals to open the game and cruised to an 11-goal victory. Peterson led the team with four goals while Lauren Pond and Sanders each added three. Marianne Paradowski chipped in with two.

On Saturday night the Regals were topped by No. 12 Michigan 15-6. Peterson led the team again with three goals, giving her seven scores on the day. Ashley Bentz scored twice and Cyprian added the other goal.

In the finale CLU pulled off another win over Carthage, a 15-4 victory on Sunday morning. Sanders and Cyprian led the team with four goals apiece. Lauren Bridges and Bentz each added two.

Cal Lutheran (7-11) will open SCIAC play on March 29 when they play at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at 11 a.m.
