CLAREMONT, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s soccer team began conference play on the road Wednesday afternoon by defeating the Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, 2-0. Chris Estes scored the go-ahead goal in the first half of play and goalkeeper Chris Thompson held the Sagehens scoreless for the win.

Senior Scott Jones assisted on the Estes go-ahead goal to push the Kingsmen out to an early lead. Brandon Higa found Greg Young later in the half, pushing the lead to two.

CLU Head Coach Dan Kuntz was delighted with his team’s performance. “We had a great effort from a number of players… we encouraged Estes to shoot more and when he does, he scores.”

Thompson in goal starts a new scoreless streak after a penalty kick on Sunday snapped over five halves of shutout play. “[Thompson] is becoming more and more consistent and is one of the top goalkeepers in the league,” said Kuntz. “With his play, the team grows more and more confident.”

CLU (3-1, 1-0 SCIAC) will play four home games in five days, starting on Saturday, September 15 at 11 am against Whittier College.
