Volleyball Drops Season Opener
Regals Swept by Buena Vista (IA) University

Photo: Scott Chisholm · Hi-res imageREDLANDS, Calif. – The defending Western Regional Champion Regals volleyball team opened up their 2007 campaign on Saturday and were swept by Buena Vista University of Iowa at Currier Gym in Redlands.
The game scores were 30-28, 30-28 and 30-24.
Cal Lutheran (0-1) was out hit in each of the three games including a third game that saw Buena Vista (1-1) hit at .514 clip compared to a .256 mark for CLU.
Freshman right side Kelsey Griffin led Cal Lutheran with 11 kills on 25 attempts for a .320 hitting percentage on the day. Junior Summer Plante-Newman claimed 10 kills but hit for a .026 percentage for the match. The outside hitter also notched a team high 14 digs.
Junior setter Lindsey Benson dished out 42 assists and added four kills. Freshman Ashley Clark tallied three of Cal Lutheran’s four aces.
Sophomore Kelli Luitjens led the way for Buena Vista with a .440 hitting percentage. The middle hitter collected 15 kills on 25 attempts. Junior setter Molly Reuter collected 37 assists and 14 digs.
The Beavers hit at a .291 percentage for the match while the Regals hit .200.
BVU had lost to Redlands 3-1 earlier in the day and are scheduled to take on La Sierra at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday to complete their three-match day in Currier Gym at Redlands.
Cal Lutheran plays at Westmont on Thursday, Sept. 6 for a second chance to pick up their first victory of the young 2007 season. Cal Lutheran is 4-11 all-time against Westmont but has not faced the Warriors since Sept. 9, 2000.
