THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s soccer team knocked off NAIA Division I opponent California Baptist University 4-0 at home on Tuesday afternoon to open its 2007 campaign. Josh Moskowitz curled a pass to the far post finding Brandon Higa just over six minutes into the first half and the Kingsmen never looked back.

Cal Lutheran remained up 1-0 at the half when nearly 25 minutes later a Cal Baptist red card left the Lancers down a player and the defense vulnerable. The freshman pair of Victor Perez and Jorge Martinez took full advantage and scored the remaining three goals during the final 15 minutes of regulation. Four different players assisted on each goal including Moskowitz, Alex Tragos, Kyle Smithe and Robbie Spangler.

Senior goalkeeper Chris Thompson led the defensive effort making five saves, four in the second half to preserve the shutout. “Chris came up big today…he lifted the team and made it feel secure in the back,” said CLU Head Coach Dan Kuntz. “The team’s defensive effort took control of the game and denied [Cal Baptist] possession.”

The former undefeated Lancer (2-1-1) squad managed 10 shots in the contest, including a pair from freshman Tim Wardell. CBU goalkeeper Adam Kramer stopped for shots in the loss.

The victory marked the 300th win in the CLU men's soccer program history (300-279-33), a period of 34 seasons.

CLU (1-0) will travel to Washington to take on regional opponents Pacific Lutheran University and Whitworth University on Friday, September 7 and Sunday, September 9, respectively.
