Men's Water Polo Defeats Chapman, Avenges Concordia
Kingsmen go 4-for-5 at Host Tournament
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University men’s water polo team won a pair of contests to close out its inaugural tournament on Saturday, avenging an earlier loss to Concordia University 6-4 and defeating Chapman University in the event finale, 8-5. Matt Heagy scored 15 goals in Cal Lutheran’s five games over the past three days to lead the Kingsmen squad.
CLU played the opening game for the third consecutive day with Saturday’s contest against Concordia. Heagy and Scott Bredesen each scored a pair of goals and pulled Cal Lutheran to a 5-3 lead heading into the final quarter. The Eagles pulled to within one with 6:51 remaining but failed to score the remainder of the game.
The Kingsmen avenged a 9-5 loss to the Eagles a week ago as the two squads met during the Inland Empire Classic at the University of La Verne.
Cal Lutheran faced Western Water Polo Association opponent Chapman under the twilight at the Samuelson Aquatics Center in front of a full crowd. The fans were treated to an 8-5 Kingsmen win, led by Bredesen and Jeff Chaney scoring two goals apiece.
The team managed to keep Chapman’s main offensive threat Alex Mulé to just three goals and shut out the Panthers in the fourth quarter.
Cal Lutheran (5-4) will have a couple weeks off before returning to action at the East Meets West Tournament hosted by the United States Air Force Academy on September 29-30. CLU will face three nationally ranked Division I schools in Cal Baptist (19), Air Force (17) and Pacific (16).
