Plante-Newman's 22 Kills Lead Regals to Victory

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The California Lutheran University volleyball team remained undefeated in conference play on Tuesday night, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 3-0. The Regals trailed the first two games by one at 16-17 and reeled off a pair of 14-4 runs to take both by 30-21 scores. CLU stormed out to an 11-2 lead in the final game and held on for a 30-22 margin.

Summer Plante-Newman smashed 22 kills in 34 chances to hit .559 for the contest. The trio of Plante-Newman, Megan Thorpe and Courtney Krieger combined for 41 of the team’s 47 kills as the Regals hit .290 as a team.

CLU setter Lindsey Benson controlled the offense dishing out 41 assists, to just 28 for the Athenas combined. Cal Lutheran also held major advantages in aces (12-4), digs (55-39) and team hitting percentage (.290-.150).

CMS’ Alicia Freeman led the Athenas with 12 kills in the loss.

Tonight’s victory extends CLU’s streaks of wins and three-game sweeps to six matches, including five of those at home.

Cal Lutheran (7-3, 3-0 SCIAC) will be on the road against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Friday, September 28 at 7:30 pm.
