Kingsmen Finish Fourth at East Meets West Tournament
Heagy earns All-Tournament Team honors
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The California Lutheran University men’s water polo team was held winless in the East Meets West tournament this past weekend, hosted by the United States Air Force Academy. The event featured top-20 division I schools (15) Pacific University, (16) Air Force and (19) Cal Baptist along with the Kingsmen.
Cal Lutheran opened the tournament on Friday looking to avenge a loss earlier in the season to Cal Baptist. The Lancers however led 9-5 at the half and held CLU scoreless in the third period to win by a 12-8 margin.
The Kingsmen closed out day one facing Western Water Polo Association opponent and tournament host Air Force. The Falcons jumped out to a 7-2 first quarter advantage and held the CLU offense to just two goals per quarter en route to a 16-8 result.
The Tigers of Pacific pounced on CLU early to open Saturday's action storming out to a 16-2 halftime lead. The Kingsmen outscored the Tigers 5-3 in the second half to eventually fall by a 19-7 score.
CLU got another chance to take down the Lancers in the third place game to conclude its tournament schedule. However, it was a very similar result as the previous two times these teams met with Cal Baptist earning a 13-8 victory.
Cal Lutheran sophomore Matt Heagy scored 15 goals over the four-game span including team-highs in all four games to earn 2007 East Meets West All-Tournament Team honors.
Pacific defeated Air Force 11-7 to win the tournament. The Tigers senior utility player Dragan Bakic was named the tournament MVP.
Cal Lutheran (5-8) will next play at the two-day Claremont Convergence tournament hosted by SCIAC members Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. CLU will open the event at C-M-S on Friday, October 5 at 10:20 am against Chapman University.
