Occidental College
Since its founding in 1887, Occidental has insisted on what one early College president called "a distinctly and uniquely fine" approach to athletics, one that demands excellence in both the classroom and on the playing field. Occidental is a proud member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division III level, and the National Consortium for Academics and Sports.
Approximately 25 percent of the student body participates in the 19 varsity sports for men and women (nine for men, nine for women, and one co-ed).
"It's clear Occidental [and its competitors] have the right idea," the Los Angeles Times recently observed. "Its athletes are drawn from a student body of 1,800, all of whom had to satisfy demanding admission requirements and none of whom are on athletic scholarships…They are student-athletes with the emphasis on student."
Occidental athletes participate fully in the life of the College and take advantage of the many academic, social, and cultural opportunities it and the city of Los Angeles have to offer. The principles of discipline, hard work, and commitment to doing one's best that earn students a place at Occidental are the same principles that the Tiger coaching staff applies on the field, in the gym, and in the pool.
